Fractured Memories

There are many memories that I have of growing up in California. One of them is going downtown with my mother to shop. It always seemed so hot and airless. I would hold my mother's hand as we walked on the glittering, steaming sidewalks feeling feverish. On one occasion I saw a huge Buckeye butterfly on the pavement slowly fanning its wings, perhaps dying in the hot air. I stopped and stared down in wonderment and amazement. This memory has stayed with me a symbol of loss and innocence.
