The Supreme Goddess of the Taino religion of Borinquen is Atabey, representing the Earth Spirit, the waters, and all matter, with the power to manifest herself as the maternal figure, the spirit of love, and the wild mother of storms, volcanoes and earthquakes. The idea of the manifestation of Atabey lodged itself into my dreams with the news of the hurricanes and earthquakes ravaging Puerto Rico today. I had remarkable visions of art, of the frescos in the Sistene Chapel, the sculptures of Michaelangelo and the fountains of Florence, all melding into my dreams, ultimately inspiring this painting, Ascencion, depicting Atabey – the healer, the nurturing mother of love - rising to the heavens from Borinquen, ascending to the Fifth Dimension, answering our prayers for safety.
